Why the Sanabres

The Sanabres is the shortcut the Plata built for itself. Instead of following the old Roman road all the way north to Astorga and joining the crowded Frances, it turns northwest at Granja de Moreruela, crosses the Sanabria lake country and the Galician mountains, drops into the hot springs city of Ourense, and walks into Santiago through classic green Galicia. It is the natural finish for Plata and Mozarabe walkers, and it is quietly becoming a standalone Camino for people who want a two week walk with real mountains, real solitude in its first half, and none of the last 100 km crowds of the Frances from Sarria. The final 100 km from Ourense has its own Galician character and its own pilgrim flow, smaller and calmer than Sarria's.

Practical notes

Holy Year 2027 note

2027 is a Holy Year (Xacobeo). The Sanabres is one of the routes most likely to change character in a Holy Year: quiet enough that a modest rise in numbers shows, and the Ourense to Santiago last 100 km will draw first time pilgrims looking for a calmer alternative to Sarria. Book or phone ahead between Ourense and Santiago in the weeks around July 25, keep the stage splits flexible, and expect the mountain sections to stay quiet even at the peak. That contrast, empty passes then a building final week, is the Sanabres in a Holy Year.
